Description
Cute Vintage Mustard spoon wearing a 1950’s marcasite bow.
I have cut the spoon into half, the bowl of the spoon reminds me of a droplet of water.
Marcasite stones are actually made from iron pyrite, a natural mineral which is a hard stable material with a bright metallic lustre. Marcasites have been used for jewellery since the time of the ancient Greeks but gained a more common use in the Georgian period of the 18th century when cut steel and marcasite were used as a diamond substitutes.
Traditionally seen as a symbol of love and marriage, the bow motif first appeared in jewellery in the 17th century French royal court of Louis XIV, in an era when emotions were rarely expressed, the wearing of bow jewellery was highly significant – a bow pendant worn on a ribbon around the neck conveyed a playful side, while a bow-shaped brooch pinned near the heart was a sign of being in love.
This pendant is pictured suspended from an 18″ recycled sterling silver ball chain (un-hallmarked) Choose between a silver ball chain as pictured here or a silver curb chain necklace, pop a note with your choice in the special instructions at the checkout.
